Deep River

The river running through American music is deep indeed and a rich tune like this encompasses many of its streams - rural spirituals, work songs, urban blues and jazz influences. This song found me during a search for a long mournful melody to perform in a jazz worship service. The middle section employs a device I learned from a drummer in which the rhythmic accent continually shifts bar by bar.
